It's been a busy year so far for us.

Image of Filters

The first bit of good news is that we now have a new team member in the form of Dr Christopher Flinn. He's been involved in the industry for over 24 years and brings considerable experience to our company. There's a more in depth article about Chris and his role .

The second bit of good news is that despite all the doom and gloom we’re shipping loads of products both nationally and internationally. And we’re still producing a huge variety from the more usual water and temporary strainers through to submarine dipsticks – whatever next?

And it doesn’t end there. We’ve also undertaken a ‘voice of the customer’ survey and have received very good feedback which you can read in the accompanying article. Finally, Neil Burns has, this year been appointed as a Council Member for the Filtration Society and you can read more about him found in his profile.

And all this in addition to our day to day jobs. Working with a wide variety of materials, we undertake manufacturing and fabrication in-house, producing bespoke filters through to larger repeat orders for international companies. With over 23 years of experience our filter products are used in many diverse applications, from filtering coolant water in the power industry through to filtration systems for the chemical, oil and gas industries.

Be our guest

The Filtration Society is a charitable organisation established to advance and share knowledge in the design and use of filtration and separation techniques in industry, commerce and other walks of life.

As Corporate members of the Society, Croft Engineering Services are offering a limited number of free guest invitations to the one day International Technical Meeting and Exhibition to be held on 19th November 2009 in Chester, UK entitled Filter Media 4 Cost Effective Solutions.

The meeting will bring together people interested in filtration and keep them up to date with advances and their application. It also offers an excellent environment in which to refresh knowledge, meet new colleagues and network. The program can be seen here.

As it has been two years since the Society last had a meeting on Filter Media there will be plenty to discuss including recent products developed from industrial R&D and the successful application of modern filter technologies.

New environmental initiative to reduce filter waste

Environmental imageA new environmental initiative has been launched by Croft Engineering Services the aim of which is to significantly reduce the amount of waste currently generated by throw-away filters.

The initiative, Croft Interchange, has been created as part of the Shell STEP programme and proposes the replacement of throw-away filters with a metal version which will do the same job.

This means that the metal filter can be cleaned and re-used. Not only does this benefit the environment but the company requiring the filters could take advantage of cost savings.

Throw-away filters are typically sent to landfill sites and some even qualify as hazardous waste which is harmful to the environment if not disposed of correctly, which can be costly.

New rental and storage service for temporary strainers

Temporary strainer imageTemporary strainers can be expensive, especially when you consider that they are quite often used just the once. Then there’s the storage of them in case they are required again. So wouldn’t it be great if there was an alternative?

Croft Engineering Services has launched a new rental and storage service. So whether you need a strainer from wire mesh or perforated plate you can now rent them from Croft for as long as you like and once your system is clean and running you simply return it. It’s as simple as that.

If you still want to purchase your strainers then Croft is offering a storage service. So once you’ve finished with your strainer simply return to them and they’ll inspect it, clean as necessary and then store on your behalf ready for another day. Should any repair be necessary then Croft will notify you.

Not only is this more cost effective for you and removes your storage headaches, but it’s also better for the environment as the company can re-mesh and re-use existing filters. And as they hold numerous strainers in stock they can ensure a quick turnaround and deliver to your timescales.

Croft also offers a re-meshing service for filter-plates and leaves.

Neil Burns – Filtration Society council member

Picture of Neil BurnsNeil Burns has been involved with filters all his life. His passion for the industry started when he took his first job at a wire weaving company at the age of 18 and still holds strong today. Now, as a partner of Croft Engineering Services, a filter manufacturing business with an international reputation, he has well over 30 years of experience in the industry.

Neil has only ever had a handful of jobs since leaving school and all have involved wire mesh and filters. His first job was with a wire weaver company in Warrington where he started on the shop floor and worked his way up to field sales representative. His next job was with a wire mesh importer and he spent over 10 years in this role before setting up his own business.

Croft Engineering Services was established by Neil and his brother Mark in 1986 thanks to a small inheritance and a grant from the Prince’s Trust. Operating from its base in Warrington, Cheshire the company manufactures and supplies wire mesh, perforated plate and expanded metal filters in various forms including cones, cylinders, baskets and screens for industry. Under the brothers' direction, the company now has a turnover in excess of £1m and employs over 20 people.

Supplying the water, petrochemical, power generation and utility markets amongst others the company has built an enviable international reputation by providing quality, bespoke solutions. It has developed a significant and loyal customer base by understanding customers’ needs and adding value wherever possible and currently exports 30% of its products.

Under Neil and Mark's leadership the company has scooped several top awards. Perhaps the highest accolade came in 2003 when the company beat off competition from 4,500 small businesses to win the Parcelforce Worldwide Small Business Award.

Neil helps to develop young talent and has signed-up for the Shell STEP placement programme. The core aim of the programme is to give students relevant and meaningful experience of the world of work. Neil gives young people and students from schools and colleges the opportunity of working in his business and enjoys helping to develop young talent while offering vital work experience.

Neil lives in Cheshire with his wife of 33 years. He has a daughter and grandson and enjoys international travel, spending much of his relaxation time in Ireland, his second home.

Survey reveals customer satisfaction

Happy customerWe recently undertook a customer survey looking at various aspects of our products and service offering. 55.6% of the sample surveyed ranked the quality of our products as good with the remaining 44.4% confirming them as excellent. And we did really well with our after sales service with 60% ranking it as good and the balance of 40% identifying it as excellent.

And these results have been backed-up by an independent survey undertaken by a marketing firm. The company has received comments such as: ‘Croft always do what they say they will do and their staff are very helpful’ and ‘Croft are very good on delivery and price’.
